4 Labeling Tips for a Smooth Move

Packing is an integral part of the moving process. An organized packing job will help streamline the move, protect valuables, and make sure everything makes it to its proper place in your new home. One of the biggest things people neglect in the packing process is labeling boxes. For some moves, a simple black sharpie won’t cut it. Here are some labeling tips to make your move as smooth as possible.

Color Code Your Boxes

Color coding is the most effective way to ensure your boxes end up at their intended destination and in the right room. The manner of color coding, however, is entirely up to you. Some people like using different colors of packing tape, while others use duct tape labels to provide a clue to the box’s destination. Still others use different colored permanent markers to label boxes – for example, green for the master bedroom, blue for the kitchen, and red for bathroom. Be as simple or as involved as you like – just keep consistent with the colors you use from room to room.

Use Stickers

Some people prefer to use highly visible labels or stickers to alert movers to a box’s intended destination. For example, a large circular sticker in pink could let your moving team know the box belongs in the nursery. Create an index of stickers, colors, and destinations to keep everything organized. Be sure to affix each sticker securely so it won’t fall off.

Make Sure That Your Markers Are Waterproof

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when labeling boxes is using the magic markers lying around the house. When moving day comes and it rains or something gets wet, the colors bleed and you have no idea where the boxes go. Invest in a waterproof marker, such as a Sharpie, and label the boxes on all sides.

As you are making your labels, be sure to be as specific as possible. For example, if you simply label a box “books,” are they children’s books for their bedrooms or textbooks for your study? Homing in on the contents of your boxes will minimize the need for reshuffling them once you get into your new home.

Pack By Numbers

Do you consider yourself an extremely organized person? If so, numbering your boxes by inventory in addition to labeling with a color coding system might be right for you. When you number your boxes, you know exactly how many boxes should be delivered to each room in your home, so you can keep on top of your possessions as the move progresses. If you let your movers know of your system, too, they can help keep everything organized.

If you’re not the organized sort, your moving company can help you come up with a packing system that works to keep the move on track. You may be able to save time and money on supplies this way!
